La Digue island is one of the 33 habitable islands of Seychelles somewhere in the distant Indian ocean. It is a little gem, a secret travel destination, as there are many who dedicate one-day trip to this small island, without realizing its immense beauty. It is literally a dot on the map, as its road network is only 10 kilometers. But I promise you one thing, it will offer you great emotions and wonderful moments of freedom. But with one condition: You will have to spend a few days without a car, without big luxuries, wearing only a swimsuit and flippers. If you agree with me up to this point, continue reading about the island that stole our minds and hearts, La Digue island.

How to get to La Digue

There is no direct way to reach La Digue island. Only by catamaran through the capital of the Seychelles, Victoria. So, our trip went as follows: We landed after a 10-hour flight in Mahe, the central island of the Seychelles, took an overnight stay to straighten our bodies and the next day we arrived, with a catamaran, at the island of La Digue. It should be noted here that one trip by catamaran costs 60€ per person and takes 1.5 hours. You can look for tickets, here. So, the next day we arrived early in the morning at the port full of excitement for the next 4 days that would follow.

Our first contact with the island

In La Digue island locals get around only on bicycles. So, tourists rent and drive around with only them. You can even find families, as the island appeals to all ages and all phases of your life. The houses are all tidy and simple, you won’t see crazy luxuries and excesses, not even in the hotels. Plenty of beaches, which you can visit with your bike. La Digue has one main street and many vertical streets that are unpaved! You can’t go from one side of the island to the other in a circular way, but you can, by following paths through the jungle (in most of them only with a guide) to find yourself on the most beautiful beaches your eyes have ever seen.

What to do on La Digue island?

La Digue island offers relaxation as well as adventure. You will definitely visit the island’s beaches, drink beers, cocktails and go snorkeling. The coral reefs generously offer such a beauty and variety of fish that you will spend hours looking at the bottom. Be careful though. Not all beaches on the island are suitable for swimming. In some of them you have to be careful or wear special beach shoes to avoid stepping on the sharp corals. Also, you will follow one of the many hiking trails to explore enchanting, secluded beaches or simply to “get lost” in the beauty of the jungle.

Anse Marron

In Anse Marron you can only go with a local driver. There are not many guides on the island who can take you there. The path takes about 2 hours, it is relatively easy and the experience it offers you is truly something unique. The pristine beach at the end of the route will compensate you, as it is one of the most famous beaches of the island. You will fall in love with it at first sight. Truly, no trip to La Digue is complete without visiting Anse Marron. To get more information about our guide went there, contact us here.

Anse Source d’ Argent

In Anse Source d’ Argent you can reach by bike or on foot, as it is only 2 kilometers from the center of the island. Because this beach belongs to the national park of La Digue island, you pay an entrance fee of 12.5€/person. Of course, as true Greeks, we learned a way not to pay, but with the necessary condition that you have visited the previous beach, Anse Marron, with a local guide of course. This particular beach is very famous for the huge granite boulders on it and of course for its clear, turquoise waters. The beach has many spots, which makes it really nice for snorkeling. Watch out for the sharp corals when entering!

La Digue island: A little gem, a hidden travel destination worth visiting and exploring. We all have a destination that we have it at the top of our list, a personal paradise that we want to go there and chill. For us this destination is the one and only La Digue.
