Saint Malo, a city steeped in history and picturesqueness, is located in northwestern France, in the Brittany region. Known for its strong walls, beautiful beaches and rich maritime history, Saint Malo is a destination worth discovering.
We got to know Saint Malo in the winter of 2023, through the small screen as a limited Netflix series with the title: «All the Light We Cannot See». The series was based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by American author Anthony Doerr. Read below to explore what makes this city so special.
History & Culture
Its history dates back from the 1st century BC, when the Gauls settled in the area. However, the city began to gain strategic importance in the Middle Ages, when it became an important port and fortress. Saint-Malo was named after Saint Maclou, an Irish monk who arrived in the area in the 6th century.
During the 17th and 18th centuries, the town became known as a stronghold for pirates and privateers (corsaires), who were licensed by the king to attack enemy ships. This period brought great prosperity to the city and granted its independence from France for a short time.
During the German occupation of France, Saint Malo was used as a base by Nazi troops. The city was an important military port and the Germans reinforced its already strong walls, preparing it for defense against a possible Allied attack.
In August 1944, after the Normandy attack, the Allied forces drew up a plan for the liberation of Saint Malo. The siege of the city lasted several days and was accompanied by heavy bombardment. The German commander of the area, Oberst Andreas von Aulock, refused to surrender, considering the city to be of strategic importance.
The bombardments that followed resulted in its almost complete destruction. About 80% of the historic city was destroyed, including many buildings and historical monuments. Heavy bombing and fighting destroyed many of the characteristic medieval and renaissance buildings that gave the city its distinct architectural identity.
After the war, the inhabitants of Saint Malo decided to rebuild the city respecting its original appearance. The reconstruction process took many years, but the city regained its historical charm. The restoration work was completed with great attention to detail, recreating the traditional buildings and walls with authentic materials and techniques.

The Walls (Les Remparts)
The walls of Saint Malo are among the most impressive and well preserved in Europe. A walk along the walls offers stunning view of the sea, harbor and city. Along the walls, you will find towers and bastions that bear witness to the city’s military past.
Saint Malo Caslte (Château de Saint-Malo)
The castle, built in the 15th century by the Dukes of Brittany, today houses the History museum of the City and Region of Saint Malo. The museum offers a detailed sight at the city’s history, from pirates to the modern times.
Saint-Vincent Cathedral
Saint-Vincent Cathedral is an impressive Gothic building with a rich history. It was built in the 12th century and has been renovated several times. The interior of the temple houses works of art and burials of important historical figures.
Beaches & Islands
Sillon Beach
The beach of Sillon is one of the most beautiful and popular beaches of Saint Malo. With its sandy stretch that stretches for many kilometers, it is ideal for walks, swimming and water sports.
Grand Bé & Petit Bé Islands
These two small islands are close to the shore and can be reached by foot when the tide is low. Grand Bé houses the tomb of the famous French writer François-René de Chateaubriand, who was born in Saint Malo.
Gastronomy
Saint Malo is known for its excellent cuisine, with an emphasis on seafood. Taste shellfish, mussels, shrimps, accompanying with a glass of local wine at the local wine bar – restaurant La Mer a Boire Saint Malo. Sweet and savory crepes (galettes) are also a special taste of the region.

Saint Malo offers you many options for overnight stays either within the walls, or in the new part of the city, outside the historic walls, where you will find better prices. We found a nice Airbnb apartment near the central market of the new town for €60 a night.
