Piana is a picturesque and historic mountain village of Arcadia, built on the slopes of Mainalos. It has been classified as a traditional settlement, preserving the authentic architecture and the special natural beauty of the area. Its name is associated with the mythical god Pan, the ancient god of shepherds and forests, as the area was famous for its rich pastures. The city of Dipaea was located in the wider area in antiquity, a fact that underlines the long-standing historical importance of the place. It is 20 minutes from Tripoli, while from Athens you will need about 2.5 hours by car.

The church and the folklore museum

The first stop for every visitor is the village square, where the church of Agios Georgios dominates, with its stone architecture, bell tower and magnificent view of the fir trees.

Every October, the Piano Club celebrates the arrival of autumn with a beautiful event in the village square. Dancing, live folk music and traditional flavors fill the space, while a large cauldron of tsipouro, offered by the owner, Papanikolas guesthouse, gives its own flavor to the celebration. The setting is complemented by stalls of local producers with authentic products of the region, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere that unites residents and visitors.

Directly opposite is the small but well-maintained two-level folklore museum of Piana. It exhibits traditional costumes, objects of everyday life, livestock farming tools and photographs of old residents. It is truly a journey through time and is certainly worth a visit. Admission is free and you will find it open every day of the week from 10:00 to 18:00.

Hiking trails

For nature lovers, Piana is an ideal starting point for hiking. The area offers many hiking trails through lush green areas. The most famous trails are the Cave of Pan and Arkoudorema, each of which appeals to a different type of hiker. Let’s take a closer look at them.

Path to the cave of Pan

From the village square begins a short path (20-30 minutes) that leads to the mythical cave of the god Pan, amidst a lush green landscape with fir trees. The cave has been a place of worship since ancient times, as Pan was considered the god of the mountains and shepherds of Arcadia. The atmosphere of the space, quiet and imposing, contributes to its special mythical aura.

Arkoudorema trail to Libovisi

Another popular trail that starts from the village of Piana is that of Arkoudorema. A more demanding route (1.5–2 hours), in a wild natural landscape with streams and virgin fir trees. The trail ends in Limbovisi, birthplace of Theodoros Kolokotronis. In Limbovisi you will not find anything more than the Kolokotronis house and the traditional Limbovisi cafe which is open only on weekends. The Kolokotronis house museum in Limbovisi has free entrance and is dedicated to the Old Man of Morea, with relics and historical documents. ΘYou’ll find that it’s only open on weekends between 10:30 -17:30.

What to taste in Mountainous Arcadia

Arcadia is full of authentic, intense flavors: local cheeses, smoked cold cuts, fermented bread and golden fir honey. In Piana and the surrounding villages, it is worth trying traditional hand-kneaded noodles or gogs, served with fresh butter or grated cheese. One of the most characteristic flavors of the region is wild boar stew, slowly cooked with wine and aromatics. For dessert, opt for a walnut pie with syrup and walnuts or a milk pie made with local milk, flavors reminiscent of old, home-cooked meals. Complete your meal with tsipouro or village-produced wine, and if you can find it, try lemon or roasted lamb, soft and fragrant, as they only make it in mountainous Arcadia.
