If you’re looking for the perfect summer getaway close to Athens, Nafplio is one of those destinations that can rarely disappoint you. Just a two-hour drive, you’ll find yourself in one of Greece’s most charming towns, where you can combine strolls through picturesque alleyways, relaxing beach time, delicious food, and fascinating historical landmarks.
We recently spent two days there, and here are the places and experiences that stood out the most.
Start your trip with a stop in Tolo
If you’d like to combine a swim with great food by the sea, Tolo is an excellent choice. While the beach itself didn’t completely win us over, it’s relatively small and tends to get crowded quickly. The real reason to visit lies elsewhere.
The waterfront is lined with traditional tavernas where tables are set right on the sand, making it the perfect place to enjoy a glass of tsipouro, fresh seafood, and the relaxed atmosphere of a Greek summer.
After our morning swim, we grabbed a table at Trypia Sagionara, a seaside taverna literally steps from the water, and enjoyed freshly grilled sardines while listening to the sound of the waves. It was one of those simple moments that made the trip unforgettable.
The only downside is parking. During summer months, finding a spot can be challenging, so it’s worth arriving early. Drop off your passengers near the beach on the main road, then head uphill where you’re most likely to find an available parking spot.
If you only have time for one swim, choose Karathona
Without a doubt, Karathona Beach was our favorite. It’s spacious, with crystal-clear waters and plenty of room, even on busy summer days. It’s no surprise that it’s also a favorite among locals. Located just a 10-minute drive from Nafplio, Karathona is the perfect place to spend several relaxing hours swimming, sunbathing, or simply enjoying the beautiful surroundings. If you’re planning a short trip, make sure to include it in your itinerary.
Take a boat trip to Bourtzi Castle
From Nafplio’s harbor, you can hop on a small boat that takes you to Bourtzi, the iconic Venetian fortress sitting on a tiny island just offshore. Boats depart every 30 minutes until midnight. If you want to visit the archaeological site inside the fortress, make sure to arrive before 7:00 PM, as it closes afterwards. Even if you miss the opening hours, the short boat ride is still worth it. Today, the island is home to a café and restaurant where you can enjoy a coffee or drink while admiring spectacular views of Nafplio’s waterfront. A round-trip ticket costs €7 per person.
Wander through Nafplio’s old town
One of the best things to do in Nafplio is simply get lost in its beautiful streets. Start at Syntagma Square, then wander through the narrow alleyways filled with neoclassical buildings, colorful balconies, cafés, and small boutiques. Along the way, don’t miss:
- St. Spyridon Church, where Greece’s first governor, Ioannis Kapodistrias, was assassinated.
- The historic building that housed the first Greek Parliament.
- The War Museum, if you’re interested in learning more about Greece’s modern history.
Later in the day, take a leisurely walk along the seaside promenade leading toward the Nautical Club. Just before sunset, the scenery becomes even more magical, with Bourtzi Castle creating one of the town’s most beautiful postcard views.
If you’re not traveling with small children or if you’re visiting outside the hottest months, make sure to add Palamidi Fortress to your itinerary. It’s Nafplio’s most famous landmark, and the panoramic views over the town are well worth the climb.
We decided to save it for our next visit because climbing hundreds of steps with our baby during the summer heat didn’t seem like the best idea. Thankfully, that gives us another great reason to come back.
Essential travel tips for visiting Nafplio
When is the best time to visit?
Spring and autumn are generally considered the best seasons to visit Nafplio, thanks to the mild temperatures and fewer crowds. If you’re traveling during the summer, combine your city break with nearby beaches and explore the Old Town during the late afternoon or evening when the temperatures are more comfortable.
Where to park
If you’re heading to the Old Town, the main municipal parking area is located next to the harbor. You’ll also find parking spaces along the waterfront, but during weekends and the summer season they fill up quickly. Arriving early is definitely recommended if you’re visiting during peak travel periods.
How many days should you stay?
Two days are enough to experience Nafplio’s main attractions, stroll through the Old Town, and enjoy one or two nearby beaches. If you’d also like to explore the surrounding area at a more relaxed pace, a three-day stay is ideal.
Where to eat in Nafplio
The Old Town offers countless dining options, from traditional Greek tavernas to contemporary restaurants. If you’re visiting during the summer, especially on weekends it’s a good idea to reserve a table for dinner, as restaurants tend to fill up quickly.
If you’re a fan of authentic Italian gelato, stop by Italo Gelato, one of the town’s most popular ice cream shops, offering a wide variety of flavors. Alternatively, try the traditional local ice cream at Koustenis, a beloved spot tucked away in the charming streets of the Old Town.
During our stay, we enjoyed an excellent shrimp pasta at Teloneio, overlooking the harbor, and delicious homemade Greek dishes at Byzantio, a cozy restaurant hidden among Nafplio’s picturesque alleyways.
Where to stay in Nafplio
Whether you’re looking for a romantic getaway, a family vacation, or a weekend escape, Nafplio offers accommodation for every travel style and budget. If you want to experience the town’s unique atmosphere, staying in the old town is the best choice. You’ll be within walking distance of the main attractions, charming squares, restaurants, and cafés.
If you prefer a quieter setting, consider staying near the beach or just outside the historic center, where you’ll enjoy more peaceful surroundings and lovely views. Accommodation options range from luxury hotels and boutique guesthouses to apartments and budget-friendly stays.
If you’re planning to visit during spring, summer, or public holidays, make sure to book your accommodaiton in advance, as Nafplio is one of Greece’s most popular weekend destinations.
Is Nafplio worth visiting for a weekend?
If you’re looking for a destination that perfectly combines beautiful beaches, charming streets, excellent food, and rich history, Nafplio is hard to beat. For us, it was everything we wanted from a summer weekend escape: slow-paced days, stunning scenery, memorable meals, and easy access to the sea. We left feeling like we’d experienced a lot but also with plenty of reasons to return. After all, Palamidi Fortress is still waiting for us.
