Ampelakia, a beautiful and historic village, is located at the foot of Kissavos, in Thessaly and is one of the most precious treasures of the Municipality of Tempi. The village is famous for its rich cultural and historical past, traditional architecture, imposing mansions and natural beauty.
Historical review
Ampelakia experienced great prosperity in the 18th and early 19th centuries, when it developed into one of the first organized cooperative centers in Europe. The Guild of Cooperated Ampelakia was a pioneering institution, with commercial activity that exceeded the boundaries of the Ottoman Empire. The people of Ampelakia specialized in dyeing red thread with natural dye (red gin), used to export their product throughout Europe.
The Schwarz Mansion: A symbol of an era
The most impressive example of the village’s economic and cultural prosperity is the Schwartz Mansion, which belonged to Georgios Mavro (also known as Schwartz). The Schwartz Mansion was the headquarters of the Ampelakia cooperative that traded the famous red threads from the rizari plant to Europe. The mansion is an excellent example of local traditional architecture with elements of European influence and today operates as a museum that offers any visitor a unique experience of the daily life and wealth of that era.
Folklore Museum of Ampelakia
In Ampelakia, it is worth visiting the Folklore and Historical Museum, which includes exhibits from the life of the people of Ampelakia: household utensils, local costumes, photographs, tools, archives, etc.
Church of Saint George
The Church of Saint George in Ampelakia is one of the most remarkable monuments of the village. The church, dedicated to Saint George the Dragon Slayer, was built in 1720 and painted in 1721 by the hagiographer Konstantinos. This is a typical example of the traditional architecture of the region, with rich interior decoration, impressive frescoes and a wood-carved iconostasis and choir.
Inside the church, rare icons are kept, including the particularly important icon of Saint George enthroned. The church is the patron saint of Ampelakia and a point of reference for the residents and visitors of the village.
In the courtyard, on the south side of the church, stands the bust of the Ambelakiot Bishop of Rogos Joseph, hero of the siege of Messolonghi, whose presence recalls the active participation of the people of Ambelakiot in the struggles for the freedom of Greece.
The architecture of Ampelakia
Ampelakia largely retains its traditional image, with stone-built mansions, cobblestone streets, and carved balconies. Many of the mansions have been restored, giving the visitor the feeling of walking in a “living” traditional settlement, with an air of nobility and history.

The village square: Heart of life
In the center of Ampelakia is the picturesque square, surrounded by plane trees and traditional cafes. It is the meeting point for residents and visitors, ideal for a coffee under the shade of the trees or to taste local delicacies. From there, paths begin that lead to traditional neighborhoods, chruches and naturally to the Schwarz Mansion.
