antalya Turkey/ Αττάλεια Τουρκία

Antalya is one of the most beautiful and historically rich destinations in Turkey, ideal for a 2-3 day tour. Personally, I was in Antalya for one day, and of course it wasn’t enough. Due to obligations I had to continue a little further south. I arrived in Antalya by air via Istanbul for 270 euros round trip, in November, choosing Pegasus airlines. In November in Antalya the temperatures are still high enough. At noon, most people still enjoy swimming in the sea, while in the evening you may need to wear a leather jacket.

General information about Antalya that you should know!

Antalya is a historic and modern city on the southern coast of Turkey, known for its combination of rich history and seaside beauty. It was founded by King Attalus II of Pergamum around 150 B.C. and was an important port for Romans, Byzantines and Ottomans. Today, it is a popular tourist destination, especially for those looking for cultural attractions, beautiful beaches and vibrant life.

Antalya has strong Greco-Roman elements due to its long and varied history, which dates back to antiquity, when the area was part of the ancient Greek and Roman world.

  • Founded by the Greeks: Antalya was founded in the 2nd century B.C. by King Attalus II of Pergamum (from where it got its name), who wanted to create a new, powerful city. The region of Antalya already had Greek populations, so the new city incorporated strong Greek elements into its architecture and culture.
  • Roman Conquest: After the Hellenistic period, Antalya came under Roman rule in the 1st century BC, when Pergamon became a Roman province. The Romans strengthened and developed the city, building important public works such as Hadrian’s Gate and the walls surrounding the old city center. Thus, the Roman influence brought new elements and significant development to the region.
  • Continuity in the Byzantine Period: With the establishment of the Byzantine State, Antalya remained an important city and part of the Greek Christian tradition, retaining many of the Greco-Roman features of its architecture and culture. Greco-Roman elements continued to influence the city and were transformed into Byzantine monuments and churches.

Antalya is one of Turkey’s most popular destinations, offering unique beaches, rich history, vibrant nightlife and abundant shopping and cultural options. However, to take off your experience, it is worth combining your visit with a trip nearby Alanya. There you will find a more relaxed atmosphere, impressive natural landscapes and historical attractions, such as the castle of Alanya. Thus, you will have the opportunity to get to know two different, but equally enchanting sides of southern Turkey.
