bratislava

Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia, is a European destination that combines rich history with modern potential. From the medieval castles that adorn the hill, to the beautiful old mansions and the modern architectural creations, Bratislava is a timeless capital that will fascinate and inspire you.

Just 1 hour and 45 minutes from Thessaloniki, it is a value for money option, as it is more economical than other European capitals, has short distances, a beautiful, picturesque Old Town and above all, has a calm pace! In addition, Bratislava is located close to the beautiful Vienna, i.e. only 1 hour by car.

For these reasons we considered it ideal for a 3-day trip with my mom and sister. A family and strictly female trip that gave us beautiful images and family moments.

Sights of Bratislava

During your visit to charming Bratislava, there are many points of interest worth exploring:

  • Old Town: The Old Town will fascinate you! It is full of medieval narrow streets, picturesque buildings and cobbled squares. Here you will find most attractions, many beautiful cafes and restaurants.
  • Michael’s Tower: The copper roof of Michael’s Tower is the trademark of Bratislava’s Old Town. In essence, it is the Gateway to the Old Town, which you will look for in order to enter and browse to its wonderfully picturesque, cobbled streets.

The tower that stands above the Gate is 51 meters high, has 7 floors, with the terrace of the tower giving you a wonderful view of the Old Town. Unfortunately we didn’t have the opportunity to enter its interior, as the entrance to it is achieved through the weapons museum located right next door. The weapons museum was closed at that time due to renovations!

Under Michael’s Gate you can’t help but notice the gilded “zero kilometer” sign, which lists the distances of 29 world capitals from the city of Bratislava.

  • Bratislava Castle: The iconic castle that dominates the hill is a real gateway to the past. You can easily reach it on foot, as it is very close to the Old Town. You will need to follow a path with several steps, but it is not particularly difficult. Beyond the castle you will have the opportunity to enjoy an amazing panoramic view of the city and the Danube from the castle towers.
  • St. Martin’s Cathedral: An imposing, Gothic church in Bratislava’s Old Town. It is worth a visit inside as the entrance to it is completely free.
  • Bratislava Museum: Discover the region’s rich history and culture through the Slovak Museum’s collections. More information to plan your visit, you will draw from here.
  • Main Square: The most famous square of the Old Town. In its center stands a historic fountain and the entire square is surrounded by old, picturesque buildings. You will definitely find it while browsing the narrow streets of the Old Town. Sit on a bench, notice around you all those elements that have something to tell you about the past!
  • Old Market: Closed market and a space for cultural events with the possibility to buy agricultural products, souvenirs and street food. You will find it open only on Saturday 9:00-15:00! If you happen to be in Bratislava at that time, visit the old market. The local experience is worth experiencing! We were leaving on Saturday afternoon, so we had the opportunity to be there, to try local wines and cheeses at best prices! Visiting the old market is also suitable for families, as you will find nice activities for small children.
  • Grassalkovic Palace: Presidential palace with manicured gardens, a fountain and an impressive sculpture of the Earth. You can easily reach it on foot from the Old Town.

Other points of interest outside the Old Town

  • Danube: On foot from the city center you can reach the riverside and spend time walking along the Danube, enjoying the tranquility of the river. The area has many floating shops to enjoy a local Beer. You will also find companies that organize boat trips to Vienna or Devin Castle. We found the prices quite expensive, as a cruise in Vienna costs 89€ per person. So we insisted on visiting Vienna by bus, being a very economical option.
  • Danubiana Art Museum: If you are a fan of contemporary art, the museum of contemporary art on the Danube island is worth a visit.
  • Slovak National Theatre: If you are interested in art and culture, the National Theater is a historic and architecturally impressive place to visit. To find out about available performances, visit the official website, here.
  • Devin castle: Just outside the city of Bratislava, the medieval Devin castle dominates with a panoramic view of the Danube and Morava rivers. Do not neglect to visit it, as the location and the view will enchant you!

Where to stay in Bratislava

Bratislava offers a variety of accommodation options, depending on your preferences and the type of experience you want. More specifically:

Staying in the heart of the Old Town allows you to be within walking distance of the main attractions, restaurants and shops. If you still want an impressive panoramic view of the area around the castle, it is an excellent choice. Finally, if you are looking for a more relaxing experience, you can consider staying at one of the hotels on the Danube Island.

We chose to stay in an apartment right next to the Old Town and we wouldn’t change it for anything. We enjoyed how close everything (within walking distance) and the fact that we had the convenience of returning to the apartment at noon to rest.

No matter where you decide to stay, make sure you choose an area that serves as a base for your Bratislava explorations. Check hotel reviews and ratings to find exactly what suits you best.

How to get around Bratislava

Bratislava has trams and buses to get around, but you won’t really need them if you choose to stay close to the Old Town. Distances are so small that you will enjoy walking in the surrounding areas. To go from the airport to the city and vice versa, you can of course do it with public transportation, but taxi is also very good choice. You can download Bolt application and order a taxi that will take you to the Old Town for just 9.40€!

Where to drink the best coffee/local wine/beer

  • The Mondieu coffee chain can easily be found in various parts of the old town. You will taste very nice coffee, but quite bitter compared to other coffee shops in the city.
  • At the impressive Brixton House in the heart of the Old Town, you will taste a wonderful brunch.
  • We loved coffee No 9, both for its beautiful aesthetics and for the delicious coffee at a price that will impress you. It is also located in the Old Town and you will find it open only from 7:00 to 14:00.
  • If you are a wine lover, Viecha naturalnych vinarov is a must. A place with a very warm atmosphere, right next to the Old Market. Cafe Verne is also in a very good location for wine and local snacks.
  • Last and my personal best was the speakeasy bar Michalska Cocktail Room. A well hidden gem where you will try great cocktails. To find it you will enter the Urban Bistro and follow the stairs to the toilets. Just before the toilets you will notice on your left a wooden wardrobe door. This door will lead you to this wonderful space!

Where to try local flavors

  • Local dishes are worth trying at the popular Slovak Pub which is located a little outside, but within walking distance of the Old Town. It is the only Pub that has its own farm and its own bakery.
  • A special restaurant that is also worth visiting is the Bratislava Flagship. This one is again a little outside the center of the Old Town but is housed in an old theater.

Don’t miss their wonderful local garlic soup served in bread, along with melted cheeses and white sauce.

Get ready to discover the secrets of Bratislava and immerse yourself in an exciting adventure that will leave you with only beautiful memories.
