Mont Saint-Michel is one of the most iconic and picturesque destinations in France, known for its unique geographical location and impressive architecture. It is located in Normandy, in northwestern France. It is a small island-castle-state that rises from the sandy coast and is famous for its monastery and impressive medieval walls. It is located about 1 kilometer from the coast of France in the Bay of Mont Saint-Michel and is accessible by foot during low tide.
We arrived at Mont Saint-Michel by road, about 4 hours from Paris, at a cost of €35 for tolls and €80 for petrol. Once you arrive at the parking lot, you have 2 options to approach the islet. Either you will walk a very easy 30-minute route, or you will take a 20 minutes shuttle bus from the parking lot.
Its location
Mont Saint-Michel is located on a small islet off the coast of Normandy, about a kilometer from the north coast of France. The islet is connected to the mainland by a causeway, which allows access at low tide and isolates the island at high tide. The tides are one of its most impressive natural features, which can reach a height of up to 14 meters.
This phenomenon creates the impression that the island “floats” in the sea at high tide and is connected to land at low tide. In any case, before you set off for this wonderful destination, check the low tide here.
Its history
Its history begins in 708 AD, when Bishop Aubert of Avranches saw in a vision the Archangel Michael asking him to build a church on the island. Since then, Mont Saint-Michel has developed into an important religious and cultural center. In 1979 it was recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, due to its historical and cultural value.
Architecture of Mont Saint Michel
The most distinctive feature of Mont Saint-Michel is its impressive monastery, which dominates the top of the hill. Built mainly between the 11th and 16th centuries, the monastery includes various architectural styles, from the Romanesque to the Gothic period. The narrow streets and medieval buildings add to the charm of the place.
It is a popular tourist destination, attracting millions of visitors every year. As a visitor you can walk the cobbled streets, visit the monastery on the top of the hill, enjoy the panoramic view and taste local delicacies in the many restaurants and cafes in the area.
Mont Saint-Michel is one of France’s most enchanting destinations, offering visitors a unique experience that combines history, architecture and natural beauty. If you do not intend to rent a car to explore the north-west of France, you can make a day trip excursion to this medieval jewel of Normandy via an organized excursion, direct from Paris.
